Ever since Janet van Dyne, the original Wasp, “died” in an explosion during the Secret Invasion storyline. Marvel has not known what to do with the character. Her ex-husband Hank Pym became the new Wasp for a while in an underrated run in the Avengers during the “Dark Reign” storyline. He discovered that the “deceased” Janet was actually in the macroverse, she had gotten so large that she was bigger than the known universe.
That book was eventually cancelled and that storyline was never resolved. A few years later, a new team of Avengers discovered that Janet had actually shrunk into the microverse and was awaiting rescue. They pulled her up into our realm, where she eventually joined the Avengers “unity team” made up of humans and mutants working together. Shortly after that book ended, Marvel reset their entire universe with the Secret Wars storyline. It is unclear what Janet’s status is at this point.
With a new Ant Man and the Wasp movie on the way, it is understandable that Marvel would want to reintroduce the character in the comics, but who is this mysterious new Wasp? We’ll find out in All-New All-Different Avengers #9.
